By admin | November 13, 2007
Huntington, New York….. Huntington Ballet Theatre (HBT) is presenting its 20th production of The Nutcracker on November 24 & 25, 2008 at Landmark on Main Street’s Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port Washington. Taking the stage will be young dancers, pre-professional dancers and professional dancers as well as parents of some of the dancers. However for the Kaplan family it will be three generations dancing together; Grandfather Ron Kaplan, his daughter Marnie Gershowitz and his granddaughter Emily Gershowitz.
Mr. Kaplan is returning to the stage after a five year hiatus, dancing the role of Herr Stahlbaum opposite his daughter, Marnie Kaplan Gershowitz; a role he had played for over a decade. Ms.Gershowitz was in the original cast of The Nutcracker in 1987. She has danced such roles such as Arabian, Snow Queen and her current Frau Staulbaum in this production as well The Queen in HBT’s The Sleeping Beauty. When Marnie is not dancing she is teaching ballet and raising her three beautiful children. Her middle child and only daughter, Emily will dance as a little White Mouse in this production.
Mr. Kaplan is the former president of Huntington Ballet Theatre and was a founding member, donating his time and support in many areas including set building and fundraising.
The cast also includes other father/daughter dancers - truly making this a family affair. “The main purpose of the organization is to create performing opportunities for aspiring young dancers here on Long Island” says current HBT president, Joan Albright. “However, a secondary purpose is providing families the opportunity to work together to create a beautiful, magical holiday experience for all to enjoy. Many families include non-dancing siblings in the back-stage work, ticket sales and ushering at the theater, Ms. Albright added. The production relies on the support of parent volunteers to reinforce the professional staff and crew that is hired to mount this production.
The Huntington Ballet Theatre (HBT) is a not-for-profit ballet company dedicated to providing young dancers with the opportunity to perform side by side with professional dancers. HBT is a community-based ballet company that holds open auditions for every production. This insures consistently high quality performances worthy of featuring some of today’s foremost professional dancers.
The company performs in local schoolsas part of arts-in-education programs as well. One hundred percent of the proceeds from all ticket sales and all dance fees go towards The Huntington Ballet Theatre’s operating expenses. All donations are tax-deductible.
